General-grants-program: Wallets for Polkadot

Created on 17 Jul 2018  ·  23Comments  ·  Source: w3f/General-Grants-Program

We would like to collaborate with teams in order to create wallets for the Polkadot network.

There is limited documentation yet. However, teams could take a look at the code that Jaco wrote for the current Polkadot UI and try to figure something out.

For reference, here is the current UI:

And the code:

We have a team working on this (per our discussion). Will upload further details and particulars when ready!

@EdwardAThomson we are open to add support for Polkadot in Trust Wallet. Mobile wallet and DApps Browser :)

Is integration docs already available?

@vikmeup That would be cool. :-)

No integration documentation yet. However, you could take a look at the code that Jaco wrote for the current Polkadot UI and try to figure something out. It sounds like Anjj123 is doing that. It is still early days in Polkadot so we are lacking the documentation we need.

@EdwardAThomson Hey!
We are working on Multy - mobile open source blockchain wallet.
And we can integrate Polkadot to our apps.

Please ping me in Telegram @vadimicus

@vadimicus Hey! Thanks for noting your interest. We are glad for all the interest we are receiving here. Ideally, teams will be as self-directed as possible. If you see my previous comment it has links to the two places where you can get an idea of what's required for wallet integration.

@gcsfred2 Glad to see your interest. Hopefully you will be able to collaborate with another team!

Would be great to have a Polkadot integration for our secure mobile wallet project AirGap.

@EdwardAThomson got it, thanks.
Do you have some kind of grant for developers to implement this feature?

@vadimicus

I checked on this issue with the management team. There can be a grant in the future, prior to launch, but right now it isn't being prioritised. What would help us more right now is API documentation. On this last point, we are considering putting a GitCoin bounty in place for this task.

We have had one team reach out to us already who have a partially working example. So far, they have done it in their spare time. Although we appreciate that isn't necessarily possibility for all teams.

@pascuin @vikmeup @jplatts12

Hello @EdwardAThomson was wondering if you guys are still open for wallet development. Currently, our team is building out a wallet and would love to support Polkadot in any manner. E.g. supporting dot tokens!

Hey @lerajk we are open to receiving more applications and look at each on a case-by-case basis. We do have a lot of wallet builders already, so I wouldn't be able to give any guarantees that we will fund another wallet, but we are happy to discuss possibilities.

Perhaps you can send a brief overview of your idea to us? Send it to the grants@ email address ( web3.foundation )

Hello @EdwardAThomson thank you for your prompt reply, really appreciate it!

Yes I understand. Funding is not an issue for us and we will continue to develop our wallet, however we seek to contribute to the polkadot ecosystem with the best of our ability. We are also currently investigating on building a parachain through substrate which is a larger task at this point. This is an area that we would love to explore possibilities and seek technical guidance.

Once I refine the technicalities, I can send a proposal. Perhaps we could connect then?

Sure! Feel free to send an email anyway. Perhaps we can start a conversation early and help to clarify any questions you might have? I can put you in touch with @jplatts12 who is helping to coordinate parachain teams in preparation for launch.

ok awesome! kinda embarrassing but I'm unable to figure out the format of this email address - grants@ email address ( web3.foundation ) lol

would you mind sending an email to [email protected] introducing @jplatts12 as well ?

Thanks!

Cheers,
Lee

@EdwardAThomson we'd love to talk about adding support for Polkadot and parachain's in Lunie (mobile, web, browser extension).

Should we email grants@ or submit an application or both?

Hey, @jbibla ! You are free to apply without telling us / asking us. If you have questions, of course, then feel free to email us in advance.

Parachains are not yet ready for prime time; however, it is definitely possible to start integrating Polkadot into your wallet. I suspect that the cryptography used by the parachains ought to be the same as the relay chain. We are working on Ledger integration too, although I suspect you already know that! ;-)

Having support for JS injection from a browser extension (like Metamask) is also welcomed. Actually... maybe it is worth emailing us for a chat! If you mail us at the grants email address then I or @dfishb will pick it up and get a conversation going. :-)

Any chance you are at Web3 Summit this week?

Hi @EdwardAThomson - our team at Shard X have developed a keyless wallet for institutions using secure multiparty computation. It'd be great to chat about preparing a polkadot implementation!

Hey @navshardx, This is something we can explore. If you have a something you can share then we can potentially take a quick review to get a better feeling for it. Ultimately, I'd push it towards our resident cryptographer @burdges.

I'm guessing this is with a view to potentially apply for a grant. The best next step would be to start preparing a grant application. We do have a lot of applications in at the moment and we give priority to teams who have already submitted.

All the necessary info can be found on our grants page: http://grants.web3.foundation/

Is there a paper or other explanation of cryptography, protocol, security assumptions, etc.?

Hi @EdwardAThomson , @burdges

Our CTO would be the best person to chat to about the technical details and what a polkadot implementation might look like. Please drop me a mail at [email protected] or provide me with yours - I can schedule something as well as link you to our whitepaper and API docs
