Ansible: ssh-extra-args ProxyCommand disables host_key_checking=False

Created on 11 Mar 2016  ·  3Comments  ·  Source: ansible/ansible

Issue Type:
  • Bug Report
    Ansible Version:
ansible 2.0.1.0
  config file = /Users/tpai/src/cm/ansible.cfg
  configured module search path = Default w/o overrides
Ansible Configuration:
[defaults]

host_key_checking=False
timeout=20
forks=20

force_handlers = True
roles_path = ./roles
callback_whitelist=profile_tasks
filter_plugins = ./filter_plugins

[ssh_connection]
pipelining = True
control_path = /tmp/ansible-ssh-%%h-%%p-%%r
Environment:

Ansible host: OS X 10.11.3
Targets: Ubuntu 14.04.02

Summary:

ssh-extra-args ProxyCommand breaks host_key_checking=False.

When using ssh-extra-args with host_key_checking=False set in either ansible.cfg or in the ssh-extra-args itself, I am still prompted to accept the key for a host I have not connected to before.

Steps To Reproduce:
ansible-playbook provision_envs/configure-sid.yml -i inventory/sid --limit=tag_build_5 --vault-password-file ../vault_key --ssh-extra-args='-o ProxyCommand="ssh -W %h:%p [email protected]"' -vvvvv
Expected Results:

Runs playbook against new host.

Actual Results:

You are asked to accept the key as if StrictHostKeyChecking was enabled.

$ ansible-playbook provision_envs/configure-sid.yml -i inventory/sid --limit=tag_build_5 --vault-password-file ../vault_key --ssh-extra-args='-o ProxyCommand="ssh -W %h:%p [email protected]"' -vvvvv
Using /Users/tpai/src/cm/ansible.cfg as config file
Loaded callback default of type stdout, v2.0
Loaded callback profile_tasks of type aggregate, v2.0
2 plays in provision_envs/configure-sid.yml

This is not a bug. You can add -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no in your ProxyCommand if you want that behaviour. It would be very unwise for Ansible to try and insert extra arguments into a ProxyCommand inside the ssh_extra_args specified by the user.

Confirmed, this works:

ansible-playbook provision_envs/configure-sid.yml -i inventory/sid --limit=tag_build_5 --vault-password-file ../vault_key --ssh-extra-args='-o StrictHostKeyChecking=no  -o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null  -o ProxyCommand="ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null -W %h:%p [email protected]"'

tried this and not working... am i missing something

ansible-playbook --private-key aws_key.pem -u ubuntu -e --ssh-extra-args='-o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null -o ProxyCommand="ssh -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no -o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null -W %h:%p [email protected]"' -i hosts.txt ./ansible/docker.yml

still asking for knowhost
