We got the T-Shirts!

t-shirts or polos would be great, too (choosing colors and placing Elektra Initiative with nice font)

No problemo

Since my friend the graphical designer had never done a job for a open source software project, some examples or inspiration would be nice. @sirblackheart can I ask you to post some links here from other open source software? Configuration frameworks preferred. Other people are also welcome.

A nice starting point could be the gnome marketing. For example i like this nice minimalistic flyer. For a nice logo font for Elektra it should probably be based on a font with an open licence so we could build a CI on it and reuse it on any further marketing stuff in the future. For that league of movable type and exljbris can be a nice starting point. Although having a main font family with good unicode coverage is nice to have for i18n. Maybe find a nice combination of
It would also be nice if phlop would contribute his work under a open licence like CC so it could be reused for other marketing stuff if needed.

Edit:
Just noticed there exists already a logo variant with font in doc/images/hp.jpg elektra loko with font.

Thank you, that is really great input!

Btw. I am afraid hp.jpg is too low res to be useful. Maybe someone can recognice the font?

Indeed, very helpful input. I will forward the information to the designer.

The homepage might also give a good impression. http://namoshek.at:9000/#/home

This is the palette I would like to use for the new homepage theme - with the leftmost green being the primary color, purple secondary and yellow only for some highlights. The colors are basically taken from the logo.

@KurtMi I hope this is helpful to the designer.

Thank you, beautiful colors!

Is it possible to colorize (parts) of our website, too? From colors alone it is hard to say how they will look like.

@beku You are an expert, what do you think of the proposed colors?

Thank you!

Here is a work-in-progress screenshot of the theme - with only colors changed.

theme_colors_example

I'm not sure what you have in mind for colorizing parts of the website but for example I plan to emphasize the "hero" area containing "Configure everything..." by adding some color.

@markus2330

  • a little cold - might fit to a cool project, and
  • green and yellow not alone and well separated, which is good in my eyes, gives a spin and fits the logo colors, all good points in my view

The designer reworked the logo what do you think? @ElektraInitiative/elektradevelopers

The font is https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Play

Looks nice, are they in competition? If yes, I would prefer the one
without 'Initiative'.

No, I thought we need two versions. Thank you for your feedback!

Since Markus talked about desktop backgrounds in the last meeting, I created two of them using the “old” version of the logo.

background - elektra center
background - elektra right

Wow, great! I changed my desktop background right away 😄

Should we get an extra repo for this images or is it okay to keep putting them to doc/images?

Should we get an extra repo for this images or is it okay to keep putting them to doc/images?

I think it makes sense to put these files in another repo, since they are quite large. Another solution would be to use Git LFS, which looks like it might be a perfect fit.

The actual source files are rather small:

Logo & Backgrounds.zip

. Unfortunately exporting the Background Images to SVG does not work correctly 😢. Exporting them to PDF does work, but reduces the quality of the gradient in the background too much in my opinion:

Background - Elektra (Center).pdf
Background - Elektra (Right).pdf

.

I created https://github.com/ElektraInitiative/blobs

Another solution would be to use Git LFS, which looks like it might be a perfect fit.

I used git-annex for some time which seems to be quite similar. But I think its overkill for these blobs which are smaller than 1MB. A checkout of the repo does not have to fit on a floppy 😄 If we need to upload introductory movies, screencasts or similar (> 100MB), we can reconsider.

The actual source files are rather small

Thank you! Normally, we should add the source to libelektra repo and the rendered figures to the blobs repo. But for this case I added everything to blobs repo, because its unlikely we ever need these figures for the docu or rendered by the build process.

PDF does work

I added both png und pdfs.

Thank you again, the desktop backgrounds are now also used on my laptop.

Based on the feedback from the last logo version, the graphic designer made a new version. Feedback wanted at the next meeting or here!

This version includes the slogan (for the t-shirt), the logo is rearranged and with the new colors. The font is as before the play from google.

Is there some kind of changelog? Was the logo modified except rotating it a bit? Does the the designer have some questions for us?

I have set a milestone in December because it would be really great to have the flyers+t-shirts for fosdem.

@waht Are you also okay with the colors 233688 dfa809 3f8f2f (as suggested by the designer)? Can you update your color palette?

@KurtMi Is the logo available as SVG and high-res? (and without text)

Yes, the colors are fine for me! Here is website theme with the updated color palette. I still need to replace the logo and check out the "Play" font.

The new logo versions are finally here!!! #1754
We would need the texts to put on the flyer, someone interested in creating some PR texts?
Happy x-mas!!

Thank you, so great to have the new logos! They will be a highlight of the next release 💯
See 2e118d87d024e37060c3bd8ef6b27b181ae8c06e, who is the author of the Logo?

How much space is there?

If there is not much space, we could use our standard sentence:

Elektra serves as a universal and secure framework to access
configuration settings in a global, hierarchical key database.
For more information, visit https://libelektra.org.

If there is more space we could add an enumeration of the most important points, like from the previous flyer (in the blob repo):

  • small core in C
  • plugin-based framework
  • abstracts from cross-platform-related issues
  • allows applications to be aware of other applications' configurations

Or from the Fosdem submission:

  • No hard-coded configuration within applications (not even configuration file names, default values, nor validation code).
  • Completely supports the current system-administrator-friendly FLOSS way of configuration (cascading lookup within multiple configuration files).
  • Configuration specifications (descriptions of the configuration) are integrated in the same way as other configuration values
  • Any application can introspect configuration values and specifications of the whole system.

Hello,
the first version of the flyer is here. As usual opinions are very welcome, here or at the next meeting (12.01)!

@markus2330 Can you please replace the logo of the ElektraInitiative organization with the new logo?

Thank you for the tip. I uploaded the logo (from blobs), changed the "Organization display name" to "Elektra Initiative" (it was empty before), added [email protected] as public email address, and added the URL https://www.libelektra.org

Does someone has suggestions for the improved text of the flyer?

What about: "Elektra provides benefits for:

  1. Application Developers by making it easier to access configuration settings in a modular, reliable, and extensible way.
  2. System Administrators by making it possible to access the configuration settings in the same way the applications access them.
  3. Everyone by making configuration context-aware and application integration a reality."

Especially 3 is of course only a first suggestion. What do you think?

What about: "Elektra provides benefits for:…

Sounds good to me. I would modify the second sentence slightly:

System Administrators by making it possible to access the configuration settings in the same way the as applications access them.

.

A friend of mine printed some t-shirts at hollyshirts, the quality is quite good, the price for one t-shirt (t-shirt + one colored print back and front) was about 25 euro.
They say they make stitching work only for a minimum of 10 pieces and tell the price only on request.
@markus2330 could you please choose a polo from the shop, so I can create a request, I can also ask how serious they take the minimum pieces limit :)
@waht in the last meetings you knew much about printing shirts, do you know by chance another t-shirt print service?

Thank you for finding this shop! I think its easier if I contact them.

To do that please tell me in which kinds of t-shirts/polos you are interested. (@KurtMi Did you have already something in mind for you?)

I do not think that a minimum of 10 pieces is a problem, we certainly want more.

I do not like polos, as far i can recall from the meetings you where the only one who wanted a polo :)

Yes, but isn't it better to order the polos and t-shirts together?

If the polo causes trouble, I can also live with t-shirts 😄

I think we can split the order, since there is only a discount on things from the same type (but you could ask in a request if they give general discount :) ) It would also be faster, because the polo design is in your hands and the t-shirt design is not so sophisticated.

I ordered shirts at http://www.millionthoughts.com/.
http://www.textilkatalog.at/textilshop-wien.html claim to do stitching starting from 1 piece, but I haven't used their services yet.

I post tomorrow some sketches of the possible polo/t-shirt design.

(a)-(d) are polo fronts
(e),(g),(i) are t-shirt front
(f) and (h) are t-shirt back
shirts_preview

Thank you for posting the T-shirt designs, Kurt. Since I usually prefer more colorful designs, I created some alternative concepts in my vector drawing application of choice:

shirts

.

From the shirts above I really like (g) and (f).

I wrote an email to both (hollyshirts and millionthoughts) and asked about price differences with multiple colors and orders with non-identical design (so that everyone can choose his/her favorite text and placement of logo).

I would prefer a single design though, otherwise it will get quite complicated.

Seems like white T-shirts are popular after all, I thought we all prefer black T-shirts but now more than the half of the suggestions are white 😄

I like the polo front (a), T-Shirt (g, f but black and not "fast", maybe "now", "easily", "finally", "shareable" or nothing) and right design of @sanssecours

I would prefer the polo shirt (c) and the T-shirt (i). I also like @sanssecours design on the right hand side.

I also like (c) and (i) and the right design of @sanssecours

i like (g) the most

Thank you for your feedback! For those who only selected only fronts/back: Do you mean it should only be printed on one side?

Btw. different sizes (man and woman) never add additional costs, so please do not forget to tell me which sizes you want.

The costs of larger stitchings and colors seem to differ vastly across different providers. Special fonts and in-time delivery might also be a problem for stitchings. If we run out of time, we might need to buy printed shirts now and order stitchings later.

I think

  • (i) and (h) or
  • @sanssecours second design or (e) and (f)

go great together.

For color I prefer black but white would be ok too.

I would prefer the polo shirt (c) and the T-shirt (i). I also like @sanssecours design on the right hand side.

I think one side would be enough. But if you add a slogan, it would also be fine for me.

I'll probably need XL as size.

I'll probably need XL as size.

One provider (http://www.logoproducts.at/) said they could deliver a set of shirts so that we can try them on (because "XL" is not a standard). For printed shirts they would also send one piece with logo so that we can check if everything is as wanted. They would, however, not be able to deliver stitchings timely.

I think (i) as front only is an easy and simple design, could also work with white shirt and black font color.
The left suggestion from @sanssecours is a very refreshing design.

@markus2330 suggested that sticker would also be nice to have for FOSDEM, so what do you think of those two versions. I prefer the rectangle one, it looks more professional.

@KurtMi wrote about Shirts:

If there are only little extra costs I would prefer front+back (visibility). It also has the advantage that we might easier find a compromise in which most people get a motive they like (either on front or back).

Did someone count the votes up to now?

Stickers: I think both are great but you are right that the version at the bottom is less playful. I'll definitely put it on my laptop.

Are there any troubles in printing stickers on a regular ink or laser printer?

We need to decide which t-shirt we want at hollyshirt. It seems like we need do be quick (over this weekend) so that we get everything in-time.

Not only at hollyshirt, the decision needs to be definitely done this weekend.

A friend said they could make one piece for us so that we see how it looks like. (Then we would of course have to order the others in their store, too.) I had in mind that we use this opportunity to make a black t-shirt with the colored logo, to see how it looks like.

i front, f back seems to be a good decision, where at least one of the sides seems to be favored by most. Imho the (colored) logo could be a bit larger, though.

Is someone willing to draw this?

One more idea: what about to add a green text "libelektra.org"? (the hyperlinks on our website with @waht's changes are green, too.) Might be too much on the t-shirt, though.

@KurtMi Which T-Shirts Polo and fonts did you use in your screenshot above?

@KurtMi Which T-Shirts Polo and fonts did you use in your screenshot above?

Sorry, for the late reply, It was from george and is a casual version, but I just googled black polo shirt
and took a picture. The versions where the logo is above the font is self made out of two logo versions.

What do you mean with a "self made" font?

I think it would be better if we have a link to libelektra.org than the sentence "Configure everything,...".
Maybe we can even give a little logo at the backside? I'll try to draw it.

I made little changes to @KurtMi and @sanssecours designs and created

https://github.com/ElektraInitiative/blobs/tree/master/images/tshirts

They will be redrawn for the printing anyway.

What do you mean with a "self made" font?

I meant the logo where the circles are above the Elektra font is a rearranged version of one logo versions.

The first t-shirt will be produced tomorrow.

Still open are flyers, any update on this?

The updated version of the flyer is here. As always feedback here or today at he meeting!
elektra_flyer

Thank you so much, I printed it for the meeting today!

Btw. in my browser the blue is wrong but in gimp it works. Seems like there are troubles with the embedded color profile?

There are no troubles. It's just a CMYK color profile for print, whereas almost all browsers only display sRGB. I'm actually surprised if gimp really shows it correctly.

Below it is in RGB without an embedded color profile.
flyer

I printed the flyers and stickers. As far as I can tell the flyers are okay (of course the resolution could be better and the cutting could be more accurate but the problems are minor) but the stickers leave a lot to desire. (They are basically only okay for white, glossy surfaces.)

Does someone know a shop which makes really nice transparent, UV protected stickers within 2 work days (so that I would receive them/get them on Wednesday)?

Druck.at seems to be able to deliver until Wednesday - not sure what format our stickers are.
Flyeralarm takes 5-7 days, but maybe they are faster for our sticker format.

Any experience with druck.at? If we do not know it we could also try some belgian service, then we would have a whole week (delivered to hotel).

not sure what format our stickers are.

A4 cut in 5 parts.

So nobody has experience with printing stickers?

Is everyone in favor of having U-necks (instead of V-necks)? I'll ask if it is possible to change this. (It might even save some money.)

If someone wants additional t-shirts you can still tell me today.

So nobody has experience with printing stickers?

Nope, sorry. :-(

Is everyone in favor of having U-necks (instead of V-necks)?

I really have no preference here, so U-neck is fine.

I ordered the t-shirts with U-neck. It is basically the same price but better quality (180g).

We got the T-Shirts!

I want to order stickers at https://flyeralarm.com

They won't be ready for Linuxwochen but if we do not start ordering them now, they will also not be ready for the next event.

There are two questions:

I think for the first batch logo+text might be better, because people might not yet know the name Elektra (nor the URL). Ordering both variants is twice as expensive, so I won't order them together in one batch.

What do you think?

There are two questions:

Personally I prefer "logo + text".

As discussed @tom-wa draws a white border around the logo and text

@reox was so nice and added a white border around the text. see "sticker_rectangle_white.svg".

Do we need white lines also around the logo, too?

Do you already have an opinion about the size of the Logo?

The size of the old sticker is about 21x6cm of which 18.5x4.7cm are printed.

So the 5.1x29.8cm would be a good size: It would fit our current sticker and we would have additional space for a Debian Swirl.

The most popular sizes of T-Shirts are out (S,M,L). Should we reorder exactly the same T-Shirts or should we try something different?

I'll order new t-shirts, stickers, and possible cups. Please write by email or here if you want something (t-shirts with size).

T-shirts, cups, and stickers were ordered yesterday.

Stickers are already here! The border did not work, so you cannot use it on surfaces which have a color of the logo or text (black).

Cups won't be available till the next meeting but soon after. They will look like: https://github.com/ElektraInitiative/blobs/blob/master/images/cups/printproof.pdf

that's unfortunate :( have you asked why? Because the border color should have been different from white.

I submitted the first version where the border color was still white. It was not possible to change the uploaded file afterwards.

For the cups, https://github.com/ElektraInitiative/blobs/blob/master/images/cups/sizes.pdf might be better, what do you think?

Okay I see. Then we will see if it is working for the next batch of stickers :)

@ElektraInitiative/elektradevelopers It would be great to get some feedback about the cups

@reox wrote:

Then we will see if it is working for the next batch of stickers :)

That won't be soon. The 1000 stickers weight 1.5kg, it is really a lot. There is a lot of cutting to do, so if you have some time

cups are now ordered with a single logo, as in https://github.com/ElektraInitiative/blobs/blob/master/images/cups/printproof.pdf

t-shirts should arrive for the next meeting, so if you do not have one, do not miss to come next Thursday

I think we now have done enough merchandising for now.
