Panorama-tab-groups: Feature request: Option to remove number of tab groups in icon

Created on 4 Nov 2019  ·  11Comments  ·  Source: projectdelphai/panorama-tab-groups

Can you add an option to hide the (new, as of today's update) number of tab groups in the icon? Some might find it useful, but being red, and looking exactly like so many "notifications waiting" cues on so many websites, I find it needlessly eye catching and distracting.

Don't worry I will! It's something that I'm not a huge fan of either, but I ran out of time today to add another option. I'm also thinking of changing the red to a mute grey so it doesn't seem so extreme either.

I think even with counter activated it might be a good idea to hide the counter if the value is "1", which means that tab groups are not being actively used (as all tabs are in the only tab group which is active).

I'm also thinking of changing the red to a mute grey so it doesn't seem so extreme either.

Personally, I find the badge very distracting as-is, but if the color were muted I think I'd find it quite useful. I like the idea of having an option to delete it, but I'd keep the badge enabled if the color weren't so distracting!

Personally I don't find it that useful, but I know people have brought up that they think it's valuable so I'll be adding options to keep it in but also various stages of hiding for those who don't want it.

Aside from the aesthetic, there are some other small issues with the number that could be improved.

The number doesn't update when groups are added and removed in the panorama view. Also if firefox is closed in panorama view and reopened, the number displays 1 until a tab is selected.

My two cents:

It's useful to have the number up there, but presenting it this way is not ideal. This specific style of UI element (a little red number badge in the corner floating over a button) is conceptually associated with "new" - i.e. you have this many new emails, there are this many new articles on Feedly, or this many "somethings" have changed since you've last looked at them. Click me and get rid of them already. The number will go down once you view the email or open Feedly or whatever.
My brain can't quite figure out that this element is being used differently, so I'm constantly looking up there and feeling like I should click the button and get rid of the darn notifications.

I came here to log this ticket. I agree it has its use and would personally use the feature, especially since I discovered Session Sync recently (160+ open tabs at all times is browser abuse, and I was doing it for a long time). I now use tab groups for complex, time-sensitive tasks.

I have some UX reading under my belt and I support offering the option to remove it. However, it does have a practical use. I would still personally turn it off due to the association the mind makes when it sees the red notification-style badge.

So my suggestions from my design experience are:

  1. Offer users the option to remove the badge.
2a. Change the colour. Hardcoding it is probably fine, honestly.
2b. Alternatively, you could overlay the number onto the logo, but it may be hard to read so you'd need to apply some kind of effect. It would look less yet like a notification icon.
  2. Supress the badge and number displaying if there is only one group.

Code can be simplified elsewhere, for example, by removing the keybinds config screen as Firefox implements this natively.

any news on this issue?
or any tips how to downgrade to previous version?

We all appreciate that programming takes time and that this is not the most important thing in your life right now, but it's been 7 months since you made this change and this ticket was opened. In the interest of a short term solution, can you please just change the colour from White-on-Red to something like White-on-Grey. Thanks!

Sorry. There's not really any excuse, I've just had some health issues that make coding hard for me. I wasn't saying anything cause I was hoping that it'd go away but it's taking it
s time. I'm pushing the new code now just to get the release out since it's been sitting there for a while.

I'm also going to work on giving @vaxul push access if he wants it since it's something I've been thinking about for a long time. It would help to get features to this project while I work on more meta things while I can (documentation, testing, style guides, etc).

Working on the release notes for this latest version and you should see it through updates and on the Mozilla page in the next hour.

I hear you Reuben, I really do respect the work that goes into open source, and look forward to dedicating more of my time to it in the future, but like everyone else, life and other responsibilities get in the way, don't they! I hope I didn't come across as too blunt, I didn't mean it that way. In any case, thanks for putting some time in to complete the release, look forward to trying it out!

Cheers!
