Plots2: Call for Summer of Code 2019 mentors!

Created on 9 Jan 2019  ·  85Comments  ·  Source: publiclab/plots2

With Rails Girls Summer of Code and Google Summer of Code 2019 coming up, we're looking ahead to who may be interested in mentoring for these programs. We have participated in both during the past few years, and while we are not guaranteed spots, we are planning to apply as an organization.

Read some of last year's proposals here, and participate in project idea brainstorming here. If one of the project ideas strikes your interest, please mention it!

We especially welcome people from groups underrepresented in free and open source software!

It's very important to us to have diverse representation in our mentor group just as in our participant group. And remember -- our community aspires to be a respectful place. Please read and abide by our Code of Conduct.

To participate:

This year, we're asking that mentors have taken some of the following steps to be part of our community:

  1. Solve a first-timers issue. Provide the link to the first timer issue's pull request (PR) once it's merged. In case, you are not able to find any first-timer issue, solve issue marked as fto-candidate or support, these issues may require little more work, but we'll try to help.
  2. Solve a help-wanted issue. Help wanted issues are issues which are not labelled as gci-candidate neither as fto-candidate nor as first-timer-only. Provide link to such issues' merged PR.
(Make sure you claim the issue first by commenting on issue you are planning to solve)
  3. make a first-timers issue. Use the extra friendly template which we generally use for creating our first timer issues. Provide the link to the first timer issue which is created by you.

Mentors check in with a student at least once per week roughly from May-August, and offer some project management guidance and encouragement... while relying on the chatroom and the @publiclab/reviewers group to provide code-specific input, so that we share the burden of specific technical support. We have weekly Check-Ins on GitHub (#4548) as well, and mentors are expected (along with students!) to be in the rotation to post these occasionally.

Remember that to be a mentor you don't necessarily need to know how to code -- we also need mentors who know Public Lab's community and practices well, and who can encourage students to speak up when they get stuck, and to ask the community for input and testing of their work. Students often get stuck when they don't know how something should look, or how a feature might be used by the community -- contextual info!

If you're interested in being a mentor, leave a comment here -- and read over our software outreach resources to get an idea of how we work!

Thanks a lot, and we're happy to answer questions!

If there is a condition that a person can not become GSOC mentor and participant both then i would first become a participant and maybe next year i can become a mentor.
so @SidharthBansal i have edited this according to your comment, i will work under a mentor this year.

At a time either a person can be a GSoC mentor OR a student. If you are
commenting here this means you are sure to be mentor.

Dhiraj great to see you as a mentor.
Oorjit can you please check GSoC official guidelines?

Just to ping all the willing students that Mapknitter has high chances of being selected for this year's GSoC projects. So, students can start contributing to it too if they want.

Hi, everyone! I've just compiled up our Ideas list for 2019. We can continue to adjust it, but this includes the core projects we're interested in that are most mission specific for Public Lab as a movement.

https://publiclab.org/gsoc-ideas

Please if you have fulfilled the requirements to be a mentor, if you could go in and add your names next to projects you would like to mentor on. I'm also happy to discuss additional projects we might add, but I'd like to start by getting a good set of mentors signed up for these core projects.

Thanks everyone!!! 👍 🎉

Sure

Hello mentors! @publiclab/mentors @publiclab/plots2-reviewers @publiclab/reviewers

I'm hoping to help Nirvakalpa108 with a first-timers-only issue, but have to run to a meeting right now. Is someone able to try responding to them with a new one, maybe pulled from this list of candidates? https://github.com/publiclab/plots2/labels/fto-candidate

You could just mention their username or respond here: https://github.com/publiclab/plots2/issues/4820#issuecomment-471051195

I'd truly appreciate it!

@jainaman224 just checking, have you gone through the requirements listed above? Thank you so much!

@jywarren Sorry, I will submit PR this week.

Hii!!, I would like to be a mentor for Summer of Code 2019. I like the Public Lab and am looking forward to be a part of this amazing community.

and also I am working on the requirements for becoming a mentor and would soon meet them.

Hi everyone! Just to get organized, please if you are planning on being a mentor this year, fill out this form, which also includes dates of unavailability so that we can coordinate, especially in very busy parts of the summer. Thanks to @SidharthBansal for creating the form:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd-4xwxlCdYFGYklds3sTb21LR1nlF5oWJnLA73LZlGyWag3g/viewform

And thanks, @jainaman224 and @madhavsarpal100 -- great to hear!

Thanks all!

Just a note - we now have 22 proposals https://publiclab.org/notes/warren/02-28-2019/call-for-summer-of-code-2019-proposals

I could definitely use some help reviewing and providing feedback and input. You can see some good examples of input on the oldest proposals, and it's OK to simply cite/quote some of those sections if you think it's useful for newer proposals. We can also ask people to help leave comments on each others' proposals, as many have done.

Many of you have already helped provide reviews, and thank you so much! If you can chime in on this thread about what you've reviewed, that'll help us coordinate.

Thanks again! We have a big group of mentor volunteers this year and that should make this task not too hard. Thanks a ton for your hard work!

We are in the last 2 days before the deadline, folks, and I would really appreciate some reviewing help, especially with the applications that have come in in the final days. Thanks everyone, we're almost there!!!

Hi, all! I noticed we didn't hear a confirmation from @oorjitchowdhary @Paarmita @codeIriss @rbhatia46 @aSquare14 @Dhiraj240 @bhavayAnand9 @madhavsarpal100, but we are still interested in having more mentors if you are able to complete the requirements and fill out the form!

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd-4xwxlCdYFGYklds3sTb21LR1nlF5oWJnLA73LZlGyWag3g/viewform

Thank you so much!!!

This year I applied as a participant for coala where I applied for 2 projects but I was unable to get a slot there. I had in mind to apply for Public Lab as a backup for "spectral workbench proposal" but it was hectic for me and that laziness shattered me.
Although I have applied as a mentor now at the above form, next year I will keep these things in mind..
Just check this which has previous Public Lab work.

@jywarren I am sorry for being inactive in the last few months. I had some other commitments, however I am free now and would love to be a mentor. Thank you for giving me another opportunity. Shall fill up the form asap !

Here are my all time statistics and I have also filled up the form with the latest details.

@jywarren Sorry for being inactive from last two months as I was not able to apply as student this year due to some commitments but i would definitely love to mentor and have completed the requirements.

@jywarren when will list of mentors be announced ?

I'm sending invitations now! I did note that the form wasn't as specific as the requirements listed at the top -- it just asked for 2 FTO URLs. But actually the first is one you SOLVED and the second one is one you POSTED for someone else to solve. I'd love if those who didn't add the 2nd type could either re-fill the form or leave a comment here with the extra URL. Thanks!

OK, i went through the list - thanks all! Once you accept I'll add you to the right teams and assign projects (and this can be changed too, later!)

I held off on 2-3 because of the ambiguity in the form, for which I apologize - if people who didn't get an invite could check and really look to be sure they've /created/ a first-timers-only issue, and reviewed someone else's PR, and provide those links, that'd be great. You don't have to resubmit the ones you already submitted - just put "ALREADY SUBMITTED" and just add in the ones that were missing.

Thanks and apologies for our not having completely clear instructions on the form! You're all very close to the requirements, i just want to be sure everyone has a good understanding of how first-timers-only issues are made and what are the necessary ingredients to support people and welcome them in this way! I'm happy to answer questions and there is more documentation at the very top of this post. Thank you!

And, apologies again for taking so long to complete this!

@jywarren Thank You, sir, I have received it and accepted it too. Waiting to get the "spectral workbench" project get assigned.
Also, I used different email id while accepting which is [email protected]
Sorry for doing this as in the earlier one I opted as a student so I had to use another one.

@jywarren Sir , I am waiting for the invitation .

@jywarren Thanks for the invite. I have used a different email address([email protected]) to signup as a mentor. I am looking forward to help with the projects associated with Image Sequencer and the sensor data upload library project.

@jywarren Signed up as well !

@jywarren @SidharthBansal Waiting for mentor ship invitation. Will love to help Gsoc Students as I helped GCI students.

Hi @sk9331657, as mentioned by @jywarren please check that you've got all the details correct. Thanks!
