qBittorrent v4.0.0 - Issues, Forum Topics

Hi all,

People complain about the UI with v4.0.0, but reverting back to the old style will also make some complain again. You can't make both sides happy it seems.

I have redirected the users that have problems to this issue so we have everything at one place.

Most helpful comment

My suggestion for the icons would be to make them smaller a bit in the torrent list and maybe the left side panel as well. While I personally think it would make it look better I don't really care if the looks don't change, I just thought I'd throw in my two cents.

I can only parrot what @Nemo-qB said, thanks to all the devs. Keep up the good work.

Here's a quick and dirty mock-up to show you what I meant about smaller icons.

smaller icons

Also wouldn't it be good to use the same "Error" icon in the STATUS field and the TRACKERS field in the left sidebar?

Hello,

After update to 4.0 speed became unstable.
2017-11-20_120013

3.3.16 no issue.
2017-11-20_123237

Is it possible to fix this?

Thanks.

I can confirm this, updated the main post. Makes me think that someting is wrong with libtorrent 1.1.5.

New design is gorgeous. Old design is ugly.
Few issues are really annoying after update:

  1. Poorly rendered icons:
    1
  2. Constantly appearing crash window after torrent or magnet link is added (on Windows 10):
    2
  3. Unstable speed.

Yes, icons are poorly rendered me too and the speed is unstable, as oldman777 mentioned it earlier.

I'm seeing almost all these issues on the machine I tested 4.0.0 on.

At this point, there's too many issues with 4.0.0 to recommend using it.

There should have been more than 2 betas. At least 4 betas would have fixed most of these issues, and too many outstanding issues were simply ignored and slapped with a 4.0.1 label instead.

4.0.0 should have been rolled out in early 2018. I suspect 4.0.0 was rushed out in order to get in front of the holiday season.

I'm sticking with 3.3.16 until we get a release everybody is happy with.

Scrolling vertical and especially sideways with mouse feels chunky and jerky to me, can't say for sure so please check on your side too.

Im getting this error after clicking on magnet link
https://image.ibb.co/dJN2Cm/Capture.jpg
the torrent does load but the error appears every time.

when double click to open the File, it only open the General folder not the folder containing the click file or folders

@quxixian
Same here, it moves in "blocks" of 10 torrents , kinda
1 - it feels it cannot scroll smoothly

And if you guys don't mind I will add:

2 - VISUAL The visual is hard on the eyes
colors and blacks and writings are too contrasted, but the design is nice
(greyer and more pastel like previous version was much softer on the eyes IMO)

3 - BETTER RECEPTION At first connection, after install, there was a progress, it was like the old stalled torrents have started to donwnload again, it was nice, I did 30 Gb in very little time
It stabilized ( I have 2000 resumed torrents in it, + 800 are completed, to me its like that all the time)
It seems the old stalled torrents are doing kinda well, some are downloading right now

4 - "NOT WORKING" After 1-2 hours I added 3-4 new torrents and they were "not working"
Nothing could be done to start the trackers (not normal, because they had many seeds)

5 - LONGER TO CLOSE I had to close Qbittorrent and it took a long time before it closed, as like it was a couple of releases ago, but that is not that bad since Qbittorrent is so great we can live with it
(too many download in progress maybe but in the previous release it did not matters, nevermind)

6 - FOLDER ISSUE The open folder location is opening the root folder, so that's another strange thing that's happenning.

issue with the rss downloader, setting a saved folder but still keeps putting the files in the complete save folder in the settings

completely ignores the separate saved folder set in rss

I also had qb4.0.0 crash on me right after update.
Hoping to see all these bugs fixed, since an update is supposed to be better than the older version...

About the speed issues:
Try playing with the μTP-TCP mixed mode algorithm option in Advanced settings. The previous default was "Prefer TCP".

Hello,
After the update, newly added torrents don't want to start download, no matter the tracker. The activity is just zero. Seeding of old finished torrents still works.

UPDATE: after uninstalling 4.0 and reverting to 3.3.15, everything works again. User settings have not been changed in any of the versions that I've used.

Except if, like me, your RSS is broken and you go back to 3.3.16. In which case, all previously downloaded torrents (haven't tried a new one yet) will not seed. Only way to keep them from pausing is to force seed.

I'm getting a lot of I/O errors, all from the same file. With 3.3.6 it also happened but less times.

I cannot install either the 32bit or 64bit on my Windows Server 2016 - I can re-install v3.3.16 but running the new 4.0.0 installer and nothing happens. There is no message, no hanging process, no eventlog messages, just nothing. Very strange,

re-checking more than 1 file at a time does no longer pause the checking for the other files :/
it checks every file at once... that's not cool.

please fix, or tell me if there is an option to change this behavior.

That was it. I never set that, so 4.0 must have done something to my value and when I went back to 3.3.16 it was f'ed up. Thanks!

Please give us the option which icon set to use - these new ones look simply hideous on a dark theme (not to mention that the systray icon on win7 looks like it was drawn by someone with Parkinsons):

Also the speeds were so bad I reverted back to 3.3.16 ... the new version only had maybe 1/8th of the download speed on the same file.

Also, The Delete Command did not delete the file from the System even if you select "Also Delete the File from the Hard Drive option"

Child windows do not respect screen boundaries. If the main window is not maximized, both the "Options" window and the "Display torrent content and some options" window can run off the screen and do not retain new position when moved.

Nope. Personally I downvote this.

Link to old icons back (qbitorent v 336)

Nope. Personally I downvote this.

What do you mean? Do you like this shitty icons??? Are you blind or something?

@sledgehammer999
OK, what am I supposed to do with that? Sorry for being such a noob...

@dreamhunt

Thats your opinion. Others do like it who didn't liked the old style and so on.

I can still remember when everyone was complaining at the forums about the UI that it looked so "outdated".

@Tuff-Gong
OK, what am I supposed to do with that? Sorry for being such a noob...

Wait for the next release, I suspect it won't be long.

OK, thanks!

Can't be all THAT hard to add an option in settings so we can have the choice between old + new icons? Those new ones look cheap and are hard to see on a dark theme.

The new icons just need to be brightened up and be completely finished so they replace all of the old icons instead of most of the old icons.

The problem is that 4.0.0 was rushed out too early. We should have had 4 or 5 betas instead of just 2.

Run external program on torrent completion option is changing command syntaxes between parameters from \ to / .

Hi, all.
After I updated to 4.0.0, the list of torrents became all messed up. The ratio is correct, but the uploaded ammount is wrong. Speed doesn't go higher that 1.5 Mb/s for upload and download doesn't happen at all.
fireshot pro screen capture 013 - -

P.S.: The design is fine.

You are using ultra ugly Square 10 and It's obvious that you'll like the new ugly look of qbittorrent too. "Modern", flat ugliness.
About speed problems, it has been written already in this thread. Don't be shy, read it!

I have the antivirus-related issue but not the same as #7737. After successful installation Panda antivirus said: the virus W32/Exploit.gen is in qBitTorrent.exe.

@dreamhunt

Im not sure why you are bashing others who do like the icons and have a different opinion? Im using Windows 10 too whats the problem? Its personal taste who do and who don't like it, calm down a bit. It will always be like that but have some respect to each other in the first place.

Anyway.. Im sure that the devs will look into the issues.

The problem is big and it's sad that you don't realize it. Spyware 10 is a disaster in so many ways. And people like you are using it because of force of habbit, nothing more. Ugly spyware, sheeps and the good shepherd Microsoft. Qbittorrent became such ugly too. Please, add an option to keep the old glossy icons as an alternative option in the settings for those who prefer to use them. New icon set is VERY ugly!

@Tuff-Gong yes wait for the next release. It will be a hot-fix release. Probably tomorrow. I hope in the meantime we can fix another crashing issue that has been reported and we're investigating.
Your crash is just annoying. I don't think it can cause loss of data until tomorrow.

On Arch Linux with KDE there aren't problems at all. Just the ugliest icons...

Stop whining already, nobody cares

Yeah, I won't be updating as long as this new icon is in use. Sticking with 3.3.16.

The slightly glossy, lightning in background icon was perfect and there was no real reason to change it to this "modern" flat... THING. I really hate the Windows Metro look.

On Arch Linux with KDE there aren't problems at all. Just the ugliest icons...

@dreamhunt: You can switch to your system icon theme (the setting is in "Advanced" tab)

Yes, it's obvious. The opinion of the users doesn't matter, right? Sheeps are all using ugly and flat icons, f*ck the rest that don't want to blend in the herd! They all must obey to the flat madness, they haven't right to dislike them!

Since updating to version 4, I am unable to seed. All torrents show as "Seeding" but after 10 seconds they change to "Completed" and therefore don't seed. Everything was working fine with the previous version. All settings are set up accordingly, number of connections, torrents, etc.

Any ideas?

I also try to install qbt 4.0 which turns into a nightmare. Crash on update, I/O errors and unstable dl/up speeds (no matter what) - I thought it was my connection ^_^;
Luckly, prev version works. I hope the devs implements toolbar skinning like the one that emule had, so everyone has the possibility to change the icons to his hearts content (not my concern, I'm more interested in functionality and stability).

BTW thanks so much to the devs for this awesome piece of software given to us for free with no bloat/ads like other piece of software nowadays are full of.

Right click and "limit share ratio..." on those torrents. Check that the correct option is selected.

Old icons weren't svgs or high resolution. The world moves to higher res and dpi. So we need something that can scale.

Thanks! That was it!

Is there a general option where I can disable the share ratio limit? I looked in the options and it seemed disabled to me?

Also, don't bother with the people whining about the icons. There's literally nothing wrong with the new icons.

Cheers!

Congratulations on the new version!
Some problems I am experiencing:
-Default protocol TCP and utp=slow speed. Only TCP=OK
-Always crashing dialog when adding a new torrent, but somehow does not really crash.
-RSS not downloading anything although it logs downloads. Stuck on "downloading please wait" Manual download of the same torrent works.
-Icons are a mess.
-Icon in front of torrent name should not be there (clutter).

No I/O errors yet.
Hope the good qbittorrent devs. will find a way to fix most problems reported here.

Oftopic:
@dreamhunt
Still ranting? We ''must obey''? You don't care about others opinion either so why should we care about yours? We do care about your opinion if you say it the right way, but not this way. Suddenly everyone not using Linux is sheeps in your eyes. Not knowing I also got Linux running now and then on a different system but okay. Im not that butthurt (it seems) like you are at the moment because of some icons change. You may not like it thats perfectly fine, but go crazy about it isn't needed. Go use qBittorrent v3.3.16 then, it still works and be done with it.

Ontopic:
Thanks to all the devs who put their time and effort into it. My purpose of opening this issue was to have all the issues together from the forum so it gets attention faster. I did my best to confirm some of it too. I hoped I could help doing this in some way.

Nope, you are wrong - I still use my SE W995 and I haven't any profile in any "social" shit. And "yes", we must obey. Everyone goes grazy about ugliness and flatiness and people like me are left without choice. Are we really such sheeps? Obviously we are...

Go use qBittorrent v3.3.16 then, it still works and be done with it.

I already tried this but it has problem - after a few seconds all tasks are set to pause. Resume them and after a few seconds they again are set on pause. Only Force resume works but this isn't an option for me because of large number of tasks and filtering them by active, seeding, etc.

Old icons weren't svgs or high resolution. The world moves to higher res and dpi. So we need something that can scale.

Then rework the old icons, why using such ugly icons when you have so beatiful base of icons...

This way I will talk with you, thanks.

The UI change has been a major talk at the forum for the past years. I can show them here if needed. I've seen people talk about a ''modern look'', outdated, color changes, uTorrent clone, look and feel you name it. I still like the old UI also and was used to it. Had no problems whatsoever with it how they look; simple and useful. Thats the main reason why it didn't changed for so long (few years) but its done now; it had not the highest priority but the community somehow was pushing for it. It was all working fine so why change it right.

The new UI feels something different where I need to get used to it again. Its not bad and some won't like it which is fine, tastes differ, but to compensate this there could be an overhaul so that everyone can use their own colors or even icons, if possible. As far I know this has been talked also in the past what the psossibilities are from Qt.

I like them both old and new as long it works fine and I can do what I want with it.

Wow, what a pile of whining and moaning...

I like the visual change and LOVE that I can access Automatic Torrent Management from the web Gui...

That said, the performance took a huge hit. Upgrade went fine and in-progress torrents picked right up, but at a much slower pace. After letting it work for an hour with no improvement I re-installed 3.3.1, which also went fine and the same torrents immediately started flowing at their usual rate.

No biggie, I'm sure the Devs will nail it down in a day or two... Everyone just take a chill pill and remember that you chose to jump on a X.0.0 release...

Cheers!

Downgraded from v4 to v3.3.16 and now all my rss feed subscriptions are gone.
Anyway to get the subscriptions in rss feed restored without adding every single rss manually, again?

@sledgehammer999, had tried playing with the μTP-TCP, Prefer TCP in Advanced settings. No improvements about speed stability.

Today I've retried to install qbt 4.0 and, surprisingly, it was a lot better experience.
What I do is simply uninstall qbt 3.x and delete all config in appdata then I reconfigure it, changing only the open port.
From what I see, it seems that 4.0 don't like 3.x's settings.
From my side, it works with no I/O errors, columns are shown properly and download seems to start and speed is more acceptable.

Magnet link -> qbt4 crash confirmed :-(

This way I will talk with you, thanks.

Recheck issue on mine. It never stops....
qbittorrent v4 0 0 11_21_2017 9_57_37 pm

In Arch Linux, when "Prefer TCP" is set, there are very desent and consistent speeds. There aren't any problems at all:
screenshot_20171121_185040

all my torrents i was seeding on qbittorrent 3.3.16 x64 cannot be seeded anymore :(
execution log is showing me "reached the maximum ratio you set. Paused." even though i never had a maximum ratio configured :(
force resume is working though :/

going back to qbittorrent 3.3.16 x64 did not make it better.

i have a lot of torrents i seed, and i don't want to uninstall qbittorrent and install it again just to waist some hours to put everything back into qbittorrent and force a recheck on every file.

a tip would be cool how i can fix this "reached the maximum ratio you set. Paused." problem.

Select the tasks, right click on them->Limit share ratio->Set no share limit.

I use SOCKS5, so whenever there's a new version, I screw up my SOCKS5 password to make sure it makes no connections without it. That worked fine.

But when I put the correct password back in, it won't connect. The log isn't reporting any errors. It doesn't even look like it's trying. It's still restricting to SOCKS because no connections are being made at all, but the authentication isn't happening. Verified the password and made sure all settings are correct, but nothing seems to fix it.

Reinstalling 3.3.16 worked.

After the upgrade to v4.0.0 I have several problems on Linux Mint.

1 - All torrents status are listed as "[F]Download" even though all torrents are complete and should be seeding. I can't manually change the status.

2 - No trackers are able to recognize the new version to seed.

3 - Downloads work with some trackers and not others though they are fully seeded.

The first feature listed on qBittorrent's front page is "Polished µTorrent-like User Interface".
Just as if someone would come demanding Classic Shell must move to a "modern look" and thus stop including a start-menu in favor of the Metro-kludge would get a reply similar to "Thank you, but this is a core feature. You are looking for something that is not this software",
so should demands for a moving to some "modern look" away from the "uTorrent clone" have been explained as welcome but invalid and given a pointer to the "Fork"-button on GitHub if their desire for a different software was apparent as strong enough.
It would have been reasonable to seek wider input before such a core change than just those that actively sought to demand changes be made.
That could for example have been done via some poll being included in some previous version's release announcement, where most users can be expected to read each such post.

Those that complain about "whining" when encountering bug-reports and development-suggestions on an issues-forum, which is specifically for the purposes of reporting bugs and posting such suggestions, should maybe consider... avoiding locations which sole purpose is something they disapprove of.

The devs made a big mistake by rushing the 4.0.0 release. I really hope they don't make the same mistake and rush out a bugfix release. Please take your time, devs.

And please just pull the 4.0.0 release from the homepage until you get a stable 4.x release. Everybody should be staying on 3.3.16 right now except for testers.

You guys are whining about changing a couple icons to superior ones which have better scalability and versatility...
That said I'm not amused by the reduction of color in the main toolbar which helped people to quickly identify some buttons. The add/remove buttons are a lot less distinguished now, and the play/pause buttons never really different enough in my opinion, but it got worse by having and identically gray icon right beside them. (the statusbar icon is of course ruined by the aliasing bug.)
In contrast, the status icons got a lot better.

I am downloading but the tracker says "not working"
The trackers always do this with the new version, I think every tracker are "not working" even though they work

Make sure that it has the correct value.

I tested a bit for #7696 with b2 and 4.0.0, but now after returning to 4.0.1 my torrents also refuse to seed without forcing them. Removing the share ratio or increasing to a high value doesn't help. They just won't start.

It looks like all torrents' got a specific share ratio of 0 (at least after trying to various things like disabling global share ratio or increasing it.), though most of them were never changed from global. I had to manually change it for them.

@oldman777 Looking at the actual bandwidth, they look to be about the same. What you call "unstable" looks a lot like an anti-bufferbloat effect. You will see that similar pattern for many of the latest bufferbloat reducing queues or congestion-control algorithms.

My guess, seeing that the average bandwidth is very similar, is that's uTP trying to keep your latency low while maximizing bandwidth.

@bcronce, but in version 3.3.16 does not have this.
My speed is 25 MB / sec. In 4.0.0, the range of jumps is about 20 to 30 MB / s.
In 4.0.1, the range of jumps is about 15 to 25 MB / s.

I have the same issues with socks5 like jagre77 is having.

In my opinion we can postpone the above UI concerns a little bit... The problems regarding RAM/CPU hogging, unstable speeds reported by other users should be addressed first.

RAM consumption seems to be a problem in 4.0.x (at least for me). In task manager physical memory climbs at 98% in about 30 mins. Pausing all torrents or exiting the client brings the things back to normal (15-18%). All these are happening with around 30 active torrents, upload speed capped at 12 MB/s and 8 GB of RAM on my W7 x64 system.

And the old trick that did the job in 3.x versions (disabling OS cache) has no effect anymore... Played around with all kind of settings, but to no avail. Finally, uninstalled and reinstalled qB using it now with the default settings (doesn't matter anyway).

I must mention that RAM hogging is the only problem I have with ver. 4.0.x.
All other parameters are better and most stable now (speeds, active torrents, connection time, peers connected, exit time), so, after all... Good job, guys!

On Linux there isn't problems with RAM. With 900+ tasks it consumes only 116MB.

@dreamhunt: I would love to switch to Linux, but I have some accounting softwares that are specially conceived for Windows...
Meantime, the excessive RAM usage does not appear always on Windows (I mean not for all users). I have the x64 version. Any reports of this failure from 32-bit users of the 4.0.x version?

People always find an excuse for not migrating ;) I'm happy Linux user 6-7 already and I don't miss Windows in any way :)

I found a half solution for unstable speed: https://github.com/qbittorrent/qBittorrent/issues/7741#issuecomment-345677622
If you set the default port 8999, then the unstable speed issue disappears.
But then there is another issue - a few minutes there are no peers, not working DHT and PeX.

@oldman777 I didn't test it on my end, but did you check your router for UPNP requests from qBt or forwarded port rules that may be conflicting?

WolfganP
3.3.16 speed is normal with any port.
How can make 4.0.1 speed to be normal with any port?

Exiting is longer, much longer
Once I had to kill (because I was adding torrents during the too-long process of exiting)
and upon restart I had half of the torrents (many) that were rechecking

EDIT: These checking torrents has been added to the destination folders, even though they were not finished. They have been mixed with the finished yet they are not finished
Had to manually add them in the TEMP folder
PLUS:Upon rechecking these torrents, I discovered that I have to recheck them a by two times because the first time is says "paused" without no checking process done, but when I click a second time it starts rechecking ...

@oldman777 same issue unstable speed here

I noticed a curious thing about speed instability: whenever I turn on my PC, for a few minutes the speed is as it's supposed to be (3-4 MB/s in my case), but very soon it drops to 30-150 KiB/s and then it just dwindles on that level. Hope this info will help you fixing this sh** as soon as possible.

Well... I'm starting to doubt about that. New problems arising every day, most of them mentioned right on this page.

It seems like the devs are diluting their efforts (at least for the last 2 years) in thousands aspects that are not addressing the main/core problems of qB/libtorrent. OR, they are not capable to solve them and nobody admits that.

I'm not so sure about how the team members (if there's any team at all) are coordinating their efforts to solve the major problems.

Right now, both this forum and github are really a mess about addressing the problems and the perspective of solving them... No polls, no milestones (at least for the big/often bugs), very technical explanations, a lot of bashing about who's the culprit (qB or libtorrent), and so on...

I'm really sorry about what's happening. I will probably stick with this client (as in the last 5 years), but the bitterness is becoming stronger every month...

@stihia the issue is both the rushing out of qBittorrent features as well as the fact that libtorrent is maintained by only one guy with enough expertise to code a torrent lib.

@Cormak: rushing out features??? enough expertise??? good luck then!

qBt 4.0.1 doesn't recognize all downloaded pieces during concurrent downloads, needs recheck to catch error or the impacted torrents stay as "stalled" forever #7893

Is there a way to compile qbittorrent with your own icons and such? I don't mind minimalism but the new ones seem like they are still on beta

Agreed. While I hate the whole make-everything-look-flat trend in general, some things do suit it and I can otherwise live with it when it's at least done professionally, but the way it's used here gives off a very 'cheap' feel that makes the quality of the client as a whole feel questionable, despite it hopefully being good old qBittorrent as far as the actual code goes.

@beesbeesbees2 I think they are re-doing the icons to fix the biggest issues people are complaining about, such as the thickness of the arrows and how dark many of the icons seem to be.

...really, the ideal solution would be an option to switch between old and new ui. Like Microsoft however, I don't see that happening anytime soon. 3.3.16 will just have to serve my needs.

I really hate those black arrows, is ugly like shit. Dark blue and black ... realy ?

Updated post (2018/03/05)

What problems I had on windows with 4.0.4 (first time user):

  • files became folders with original files inside (probably when "create subfolder" was unticked, more of migration problem) #6556
  • impossible to sort by second row, as in utorrent, aka sort by status and then by torrent name #2317
  • confusion with those tiered trackers, when adding some torrents they are in different tiers, but when adding via magnet or manually in bulk, they are in one? #8099
  • force recheck can remove data without asking (is this intended) #6277
  • last activity counter getting reset #7774

Apart from those issues I'm liking qbittorent very much.

This happens to me too some days ago. I've lost 30-35 tasks without migrate or anything else. Until than I make backup every day... I have 1500+ tasks so I can't easily migrate to another torrent client but I wish to. Qbittorrent became a disaster...

ISSUE: On both Windows and Linux, when I set the "Global Download Speed Limit" to 200K, it still downloads at 300-400. I am using PIA VPN.

UPDATE: I noticed that if I disable the PIA SOCKS5 PROXY, then the Global Download Speed Limit works correctly.

'Last Activity' column is incorrect. #7774, #7874, #7907
(open since Nov., worked prior v4.0)
Thank you!

This probably needs to be reopened: https://github.com/qbittorrent/qBittorrent/issues/4447 (Please stop creating empty folders)

I'd also like to see a secondary sort, so I can sort by name within labels

Is there any chance that a way to use the old icons and/or UI could be implemented, or failing that, a way to make Windows use the old icon manually? I still haven't upgraded my 3.3.16 build due to this, and I'm a bit worried as to what improvements I'm missing out on.

Windows :D :D :D

Is there any chance that a way to use the old icons and/or UI could be implemented

Nope. Unless you know how to code and build qbittorrent yourself.
