Plots2: Call for Google Code In 2019 mentors

Created on 4 Sep 2019  ·  142Comments  ·  Source: publiclab/plots2

Hi, folks! Is anyone interested in becoming a mentor for Google code-in program this year ?
DEADLINE 15 NOVEMBER 2019
If you're interested, please leave a comment here. Thanks so much!

Only people having experience of Public lab's workflow for at least some months will be considered
Those who want to be invited for GCI Mentor, thank you! Please follow these steps:

  1. Solve a first-timers issue. Provide the link to the first timer issue's pull request (PR) once it's merged. In case, you are not able to find any first-timer issue, solve issue marked as fto-candidate or support, these issues may require little more work, but we'll try to help.
  2. Solve a help-wanted issue. Help wanted issues are issues which are not labelled as gci-candidate neither as fto-candidate nor as first-timer-only. Provide link to such issues' merged PR.
(Make sure you claim the issue first by commenting on issue you are planning to solve)
  3. make a first-timers issue. Use the extra friendly template which we generally use for creating our first timer issues. Provide the link to the fto.
  4. Fill this form(https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1OFjj_2d4BnntXEy6bddWoKNOeBqvnJCLeGwOFORajZI/edit)

Those who made any gci-code in issue in #6239 as well as google code-in dashboard. Also update the gci-candate task with this message:
We are preparing to participate in Google Code-in, and have reserved this issue for participants in GCI - but we'd love to have your help with another one! Please check out https://code.publiclab.org to see more.

Also, add the issue to the project - https://github.com/orgs/publiclab/projects/2 Google Code-In 2019 as that'll help in differentiating the GCI tasks

@jywarren has curated a great list of things on mentoring, here : https://github.com/publiclab/plots2/issues/2053

Help copy in issues to Tasks on the GCI dashboard

Now we need to start copying tasks over to the GCI site!

Also be sure to sign up as a mentor for various tasks!

Guidelines for Mentor Prizes :1st_place_medal:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please ensure a healthy, friendly and collaborative environment at PL  . Teamwork and community bonding will be judged amongst mentors. We strongly prefer collaboration and mutual support over competitions amongst mentors. Collaboration and kindness are key ingredients for deciding the prizes.

Metric for deciding prizes for mentors :1234:

  1. Form filled by GCI students about mentor preferences and mentor work.
  2. Form filled by mentors who they think was the best mentors. (They can't fill their names.)
  3. Tasks made by the mentor on the GCI dashboard.
  4. Tasks reviewed by the mentor
  5. Other supportive and collaborative factors like FTOs opening up, issues opening up, bug reporting.

Quality and number of tasks/ issues/ PRs reviewed by the mentors will be judged by the judging team. Judging Team will involve Cess, Jeff, Gaurav, Liz and Sidharth. Forms will be filled in the last week of GCI.

This year, we are providing some prizes for mentors as well! :100: :tada: :tada:  The following three prizes will be made available:

  1. Best GCI mentor will be awarded GCI grand prize trip and PL kit.
  2. Second prize, best GCI mentor will be awarded trip to GSoC summit*
*Note: Google made an additional 'GCI' slot available this past GSoC summit, and we don't know that this is permanent. But if it is available, this mentor would be selected to attend. In case GSoC will not allow for GCI mentor to attend GSoC summit, then, unfortunately, we will not be able to send anyone there as GCI mentor.
  3. Third best GCI mentor will get a PL Kit.
Leading mentors for the following repositories will each get a kit (1 max per mentor): :
    LEL
    LBL
    plots2
    PublicLab.Editor
    image-sequencer
    mapknitter
    spectral-workbench
    spectral-workbench.js
    infragram
    Eligibility criterion: 1. Fill https://github.com/orgs/publiclab/teams/gci/discussions/4
  4. Minimum 10 tasks should be reviewed and made in the respective repository to be eligible for prizes.
  5. GCI certificate, T-shirt and Stickers will be awarded to each mentor (by Google). :+1:

Planning GCI :seedling:

There are basically 4 tasks which we need to ensure before GCI starts.

  1. 100 FTOs for NON-GCI Public
  2. 100 FTOs RESERVED for GCI students
  3. 200 general tasks for GCI students
  4. Get the tasks published by me or Jeff.

Guidelines https://github.com/orgs/publiclab/teams/gci/discussions/5

This year Google became stricter than last year. In GCI, no mentor is allowed to ask any personal information from mentees not even the name nor blog writing etc.
Also, Google wants active mentors this year. Else they asked Org Admins to revoke Mentorship Requests. PL doesn't want to lose any of their mentors. So, all mentors are requested to add at least 5 tasks on their dashboard asap. 5 tasks will help us in demonstrating you as active PL mentor. NO hard and fast rule of 5. Just it is my suggestion to show you as an active contributor.

Check mentorship: Last date to get mentor invite is 14 November 11:59:59pm. In case you have not received mentor invite yet for GCI dashboard AND https://github.com/orgs/publiclab/teams/gci/members. Please contact Sidharth or Jeff.

Mentors are requested to help us in https://github.com/orgs/publiclab/teams/gci/discussions

Non-GCI Mentors

Non-GCI mentors can also help us by creating issues and reviewing prs. We can add you to the reviewer's team if you work good! :tada:

Sure!
The program has not launched yet. It will be announced in a few weeks. Then we will apply for it. While the organisation's application is in review the organisation has to make a list of tasks. This task list needs to be broken down into independent issues on the github with Gci label on them. Once the organisation gets accepted, mentor makes copy of github issues on the official Gci dashboard.
So we require lot of planning and ground work before our application is accepted. :-)
Any help from anyone appreciated.

Task 1 for all mentors: creation of new issue list #6239 from #3276.

Love the energy!!! Let's do it (again) 😃

Hello, I would like to become a mentor this year. I hope to complete all the steps to be invited for the same.
Thanks

That will be awesome @debck

Can we solve issues from any of the repos of publiclab or only from this repo?

@SidharthBansal Would love to be a GCI Mentor this year :) !!
I shall fill the form.

@SidharthBansal I would love to mentor for gci 2019, really excited for the same.

im in! 🐙

I am also interested!!

Hello!
I'm interested and have fulfilled all the requirements.
I have also filled the Google form.

Thanks!

I'm in as well! Let's do this! 🎉

Hi everyone,

  1. Please add all issue you create to the project - https://github.com/orgs/publiclab/projects/2 Google Code-In 2019 as that'll help in differentiating the GCI tasks. This is a Organization-wide project, so you'll see it in all repos. If it's not visible in any repo where you created the task, please let me know.

  2. Also, it's possible that, GCI may be a month or two late this year so deadline for mentorship form is tentative. But, yeah, task creation can be started from now on.

  3. Creating tasks, and helping students in achieving those tasks is one. side of GCI. Another(Formal) side is accessing their tasks. This time let's have a scoring system in place so that winner selection will be more transparent. Also, students can solve issue accordingly then. Having particular points for each task is one idea, another is having categories, and each category will be equivalent to certain points. If you have any other idea, feel free to chime below.

Thanks!!

Gaurav I think we should have categories. As point system is too much
ambiguous. Let's stick to 3 to 5 categories.

I would love to help out this year. Thanks 🙂

okay, let's decide 3-5 categories then. Each category would have a fixed point/weightage.

Yes, apart from the categories, should the tasks be distributed over different repos, and should the categories be made according to the repos we are considering?

Diff. category mean different complexity of task. So, categories would be fixed for all the repos. Google just give us a list of # tasks solved by students which is not sufficient for result generation.

Okay, thank you for the clarification!

@gauravano , Thats a nice idea !!
We can make categories based on difficulty of issues. eg fixing a broken link or other simple issues in one category and then as the difficulty of the issues advance we can allot a higher point/score to it.
(say points in the range 1-5)
I guess as mentors we can define the score of an issue before a GCI student works on it. This way it is easier to decide winners based on quantity and quality of issues solved !!

Yes I think that might be good grading system. We can do that by sorting
out labels in different repositories and putting issues having similar
difficulty in diff repos at the same score.

Main problem with this system is how to estimate score of the task ?
No of Lines of Code
Functionality
Feature
There is no general principle according to which we can classify the task.
So, last time due to this we abandoned this idea. How can we fix this?

@SidharthBansal @gauravano I think keeping lines of code as scoring criteria can be a good idea only when people tend to follow the standard coding rules for example for js, according to jslint the convention for writing a for loop is
for() {\n code;\n }
and not for()\n {\n code;\n }

Problem is PL has different repositories with different languages.
Complexity of code is not determined by LOC

Yes, then i think properly defining what a feature is, no. of feature fixes will be rewarding them scoring. And yeah also the same with bugs.

The problem lies with the severity of the bug. There may be a case that bug is production-level bug. This is the weirdest system when different mentors assign different scores as their viewpoint is different. This is not a proper estimate.
Also, sometimes features require a lot of hard work(more than we suppose). Sometimes it takes very few lines of code but the complexity of code is too high.
We want a uniform scoring system to be followed by all the mentors.

All the mentors are required to read https://github.com/publiclab/plots2/wiki/Supportive-Tasks and get familiar with it!
Many students can do a single task at GCI

Mentors are encouraged to create similar tasks on all the PL repos with similar labels (if they are not present. I believe we created on all the repositories.)

Sure, will go through them!

All mentors are requested to help in https://github.com/publiclab/plots2/issues/6239

@SidharthBansal went through the doc :D

hey guys, how's it going? so good to be back. i'm really excited for Public Lab's second GCI.
thanks to last year's contest, i've a lot of suggestions and ideas for making this GCI even bigger and better for PL. i'm not officially wanting to register as i believe i still have time to be mentoring but i'll be here to help you guys for sure.
Let's do this 😄

How about we make a scoring committee and weekly meetings to rate all of
the issues?

I was thinking something like a wontfix would get 20 points.
Documentation / tests 2 points. Medium 6 points. Hard 10 points. Idk Just a
thought, saw this program happening last year but I jointed PL in th middle
of it!

Yes, I think making a committee is a better way, we can have a selected number of mentors who are involved in this scoring tasks.
And also I think we should make a gitter channel for GCI based communication so as to avoid spamming and overcrowding in the main channel.

+1 for Gci bitter channel
+1 for committee
Good to see you oorjit after a long time.
You can sign in as a mentor. We have flexible schedule. Thanks all

I think PL maintainer has to make a separate room for gci.

Hey @SidharthBansal can you please remove the mention of my username here, looks like you wanted someone else here, and I got included by typo, I have no idea what this project is about. Thanks

Akhil I am really sorry about it. Please unsubscribe to this thread

@SidharthBansal
I've already created 3 fto issue. Will be creating 2 more today.!
By now, I was performing tests on other's prs and giving reviews and making new issues. I am already working on three new modules and they are really time taking. No PRs made till now from my side.

It's been 2 months since I am researching on those modules.. I can't leave them in between. They will bring more ftos with them. @SidharthBansal

@SidharthBansal
No matter how much time these modules are taking but I can ensure that these Contributions will be QUALITY CONTRIBUTIONS.

I don't want to break that flow of working on Image Processing Modules. Still if you want me to focus on Quantity and make atleast two PRs before the Mentorship Deadline, It would be okay with me.

I can understand your concern. But rules are same for everyone. 2prs are
needed in any pl repository so that we know you have contributed and have
gone through entire workflow.
Regulations are uniform for all contributors. I hope you will not mind in
submitting two small prs. That will take less time I guess.

You can write your previous prs. If no prs yet from all times then please
do 2 prs.
I know it's wierd. But this is min threshold for technical mentors.

@SidharthBansal @jywarren I've successfully made my first task but it is not published yet. I think it will be automatically published on December,2 .

### Note for all the Mentors

No blogs and no personal info can be asked in GCI from students nor mentors. Please don’t ask students to write any blog or to give any personal information .

😊 Thanks

Thanks Vaibhav for reminding mentors about this.

All mentors are requested to make tasks on the GCI dashboard, We have to create and publish at least 50 ftos and 200 other issues before end of this month to participate in GCI.
Publishing of tasks is by Jeff or Me. You all just create the tasks and mention as many mentors as possible in the tasks.
Thanks

I will request Sunny Dhoke and Tushar Saini are requested to fill the form again. Things are missing.
I have sent an invitation to all other people. Please accept the invitation and start making the tasks.

Thanks for filling the forms.

INSTANCE COUNT means the number of students who can do the task.
For example, mock-up designs can be asked from multiple students.
If a task is multiple instance count, then make sure that task will not create conflicts among students.

@vaibhavmatta please write github issue number at the GCI dashboard.

I am interested in mentoring. I have worked with public labs before, got a chance to fix a few bugs. Thanks

Hi @shubhscoder , great, please fill the form provided in the description. Thanks

@keshav234156 @vaibhavmatta please make sure that the tasks are properly made on the GCI dashboard. I saw minor mistakes like typos, title mistakes, URL missing or mentors missing in the tasks.
Please add all the mentors related to that repository in that task.
(No need to add me nor Jeff as we will get emails for each task.)
Thanks
Sidharth

Can anyone help in creating the welcoming and installation tasks on the dashboard? We can make instance count as 100 for them.

@SidharthBansal , I will do it.!

@SidharthBansal yeah there was typo in title in 1 of the task and i have corrected it.Was there any other mistake in that task?I am not able to add mentors in my tasks. Could you please tell how to add mentors in task?

You can add mentors by adding their names in the mentor field at the bottom of the form

We are deciding some prizes for mentors. Will inform you all once they are finalised.
Thanks all

@SidharthBansal I am not able to add mentor in the task.In the previous task that i have created my name was already present in mentor field.

Screenshot from 2019-11-06 16-57-39
Screenshot from 2019-11-06 16-57-51

@keshav234156 , Once the task is saved you will be assigned mentor for your task. You can't add other mentors by yourself. Other mentors can assign themselves on that task, similarly you can assign yourself to the task created by others as well

@starkblaze01 yes,you are right.Thanks for the help

All mentors are requested to visit the GCI tasks and include their names as much as they can (in repos of interest).
Thanks

All mentor are requested to help us in GCI discussions across threads at GCI group.
Thanks

I have reviewed all ten GCI tasks. The tasks which are not published have errors in it. Please correct them.
Please include github link.

All mentors are requested to get at least 5 tasks published and assigned to them before 15 November. This time Google is a little strict regarding mentorship and GCI than last year.
There is no rule of minimum task per mentor. But Google wants ONLY active mentors of the organisation. So, I am just insisting you all have a minimum of 5 tasks made and published under your name before GCI deadline.

Thanks

Okay @SidharthBansal will do the same but when I open the Dashboard I am unable to see my tasks which I uploaded in GCI Dashboard, can you help please

Please contact me on my gitter or email address above.

Okay @SidharthBansal

@SidharthBansal Could you please review https://codein.withgoogle.com/dashboard/tasks/6140289060700160/

I will review all the issues in a batch. Please complete the issues.

Hey !
I would like to be GCI mentor 2019 under Public Lab.
Would complete all the steps given soon :)

Only people having experience of Public lab's workflow for at least some months will be considered

Google is stricter regarding mentorship this year. So, it is Google's criterion for GCI Mentors.
I hope you all will understand this. We are really happy to have your help. :handshake:
We will add you in the reviewer's team so that you can help us. :+1: :100:
Thanks all for being with us. We don't want to lose any one of you. So, continue contributing and collaborating. Happy coding :-)

Hey all! I would also like to be a mentor for Google Code In.

@namangupta01 please fill the form! lol ;-)

So, even if we solve all the given tasks and fill the form, our application won't be considered for being a mentor? @SidharthBansal

    LEL
    LBL
    plots2
    PublicLab.Editor
    image-sequencer
    mapknitter
    spectral-workbench
    spectral-workbench.js
    infragram
  1. GCI certificate, T-shirt and Stickers will be awarded to each mentor (by Google). :+1:

Tasks with their respective category will only be published on the GCI dashboard

@SidharthBansal I would love to be a mentor at GCI, but the issue is that most of the fto's are opened about 3 weeks ago or a month or so and most of the tasks have been completed. Can you assign me some new tasks which I can work upon.
Thanks :)

Can anyone send me GCI mentor form link I would love to be part of this community.

I am sorry to inform the interested candidates that Only people having experience of Public lab's workflow for at least some months will be considered
This is Google's Policy for mentorship. Organisation Admins received mail from Google regarding this.
We will really love to have your help @Neilblaze and @singh728om but we are sorry that we will not be able to make you mentors.
You can start doing some FTOs followed by help wanted issues. We can add you in the reviewer's team if we find you helpful and collaborative.
I hope you will understand. Thanks all
Sidharth

Hey @gptshubham595 , whenever you get time, can you kindly fix all the issues you have opened recently ?
Pls remove GCI label if it has already been solved.
Also next time in doubt, pls tag plots2 reviewers before you allow anyone claim an issue.

We are really sorry, we were not able to accept you all! @gptshubham595 @singh728om @Neilblaze @ugtan @aayush-05. However, we will love  to have your help at the issues. We can add you in the reviewer's team if we find you good fit for PL. :+1:
