Spyder: Autocomplete is not working
Description
In the last version of Anaconda 3, for windows 64 the Spyder autocomplete function is not working at all.
What steps will reproduce the problem?
- Install Anaconda
Open Spyder e try autocomplete

I am facing the same problem. Autocompletion isnt working in the code editor. I did check usong conda list but no enum package is there.

EDIT: Just wanted to mention that this worked on Windows 64 bit, Spyder 3.2.4.

enum must not be installed in Python 3.4 or higher, but some package is bringing it as a dependency in Python 3.6. I think that's messing with our completion machinery and breaking it completely.

enum34 wasn't visible in conda package manager. It's managed by pip. Uninstall it using pip remove enum34

There is not enum34 that I can see. I tried using pip uninstall enum34.
Autocomplete works intermittently on editor, ipython and jupyter notebook.

@MR-T77 @partha1968 Just on the off chance it may help: Is there any chance your issues with autocomplete are just with Pandas, as there is a seperate issue with autocomplete of Pandas objects on Spyder i think, due to Jedi? #5998

I can confirm that the same issue disappeared for me after pip uninstall enum34.
Win 7, Anaconda, Python 3.6, spyder 3.25
What is interesting, I have an identical setup with regards to versions and packages under win 10 -> and there it works without uninstalling enum34

Deleted enum34 via pip uninstall enum34 command and now spyder 3.2.6 with python 3.6.4 and without anaconda distribution is working properly. Thanks for everything.

FYI, just for the record, the problem is with Tensorflow and to our knowledge has been resolved on their end, but this issue will be kept open to serve as a reference for those who still have this problem.

I'm a new user of Anaconda and using Python. I am not able to bring up code hints or autocompletion when coding.
As far as I know, enum34 is not installed. When running Anaconda Prompt and entering...
pip uninstall enum34
...the output is "Cannot uninstall requirement enum34, not installed"
Comments
What is odd is that after running some code, I can bring up Help (Ctrl+I) pertaining to objects in the IPython console, which implies Spyder can refer to the documentation. Pressing Ctrl+I on objects in the Editor clears the Help tab. So, I suppose the Editor does not refer to the documentation to provide code hints, or something is interfering with it.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled Anaconda with restarting my computer each time, uninstalled other versions of Python on my computer, and tried to get code hints before updating all packages and after.

Hi, the same issue is reoccurring for me even though I dont have enum34 installed.
(Autocomplete doesn't work in editor, and Cmd+I yields a blank help menu)
I have tried resetting spyder but to no avail.

- Issue persists in spyder 3.2.8 with python 3.6.5, conda 4.5.4.
- Also in spyder 3.2.1 with python 3.6.5, conda 4.5.10
- Cmd + I is giving the help section for IPython console, but not for editor.
- Automatic Connection for editor is turned on in the 'Help' section though :/

The strange thing is, I cant type anything in the Object bar that is next to the Editor in help section.
If I select Source as Console, Object bar opens up for any lookup

@ShaktiKShrivastava That's normal, albeit rather bad Ux, as I reported in #5891 (I initially though it a bug as well, in fact). When the source is Editor, Spyder' completion libraries need to know the actual object in the source code being queried, since they use static analysis (i.e. examining the source code without running it) to look up the object in question and fetch the docstring; i.e. there isn't a way to determine unambiguously what object you mean without knowing the context. Whereas, when it is set to the console, they can simply lookup the object in the name space of the currently active console, presuming it is loaded—i.e. dynamic analysis, since it has been loaded into the active memory environment. That's also why help stops working in the Editor, but not the Console, since the process used for the lookup is different (and more fragile for the Editor).
The simplest solution would be to just automatically switch the source to the console when trying to edit the object field, basically saving the user the extra time, complexity and frustration of switching it themselves, since likely in the majority of cases when one would be looking for help on an arbitrary object not immediately visible in the Editor pane (i.e. the user's own code), it would typically be a library class or function that would be likely to have been already imported in either the console or the internal console of Spyder itself unless the user hadn't yet run anything in the console. However, that is a subject for another issue (namely #5891 ).

The most weird thing I ever saw was Spyder behaviour. When I woke up today morning, I was able to use autocomplete and the documentation query from Editor itself. XD
Looks like AI is taking over Spyder 3.3.1

pip uninstall "enum34" worked for me. I just realized that I had been using Spyder for too long without autocompletion without realizing. Now I am even happier with Spyder

I upgraded Jedi and it's dependencies to the latest versions via Anaconda navigator on the wished enviroment and this solved the issue autocomplete issue Qtwidgets.
Windows 10 64 bits. Spyder 3.2.6.

@ralphcastro504 You should upgrade Spyder, BTW—3.2.6 was released 9 months ago, and the current version is now 3.3.1, fixing numerous bugs, adding or enhancing a number of features, and making Spyder easier and more reliable to use.

@ralphcastro504 How did you upgrade? With conda update spyder? Evidently, some other third-party package(s) updated/downgraded at the same time, which is why it stopped working again; such should be indicated in the command-line output when you updated. As a general best practice, can you try creating a fresh, clean anaconda environment (conda create -n your-env-name python=3.6, activate it and then install spyder there (conda install spyder), start it (spyder) and see if the problem reoccurs? What OS and version are you on?

@CAM-Gerlach deleting the old enviroment and creating a new one with Python 3.6, Spyder 3. 3.1 under Windows 10 (64 Bits) has solved my issue.
As you mentioned most probably was a thir-party package that got upgraded / downgraded when I did the upgrade of spyder via Anaconda navigator.

In the future, the new modular kernels in Spyder 3.3.x should make it easier to avoid this, since you can install Spyder in a dedicated environment, just install the modular Spyder-Kernels package in the environment(s) you want to actually install packages and work in, and then easily change your desired working environment in Spyder under Preferences > Python interpreter to whichever one you want; future installations/updates there won't affect Spyder, and vice versa.
Carlos and I wrote an official guide if you're interested in reading more, and it will be even easier in the forthcoming Spyder 4 with graphical package and environment built right in (similar to Anaconda Navigator, which was actually based on an application the Spyder team originally developed).

Also, the broader issues with the third-party dependency stack Spyder currently relies upon for its completion, introspection, help, etc. features will hopefully be resolved with the switch to the Language Server Protocol for these in Spyder 4 beta 2, same as Atom and VSCode uses.

Autocomplete is not working perfectly. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not work.
With numpy it works but with pandas it does not work and so with some other package.
Also after pressing tab , it takes long time for suggestion.

Please be much more specific, Does completion work? Does Help work? On everything, or just just certain functions/methods (try on a builtin like open() to be sure)? Only after some time launching Spyder, or right away on startup?

Windows 8 is no longer supported by Microsoft, FYI; you should upgrade to 8.1 or 10.
Here is my conda list.
Your environment is a mess of conda-forge, pip and defaults packages, which is a recipie for all sorts of problems (since conda-forge and defaults aren't guaranteed to be ABI compatible, and pip can introduce unexpected issues). I recommend you create a new, fresh environment for Spyder (conda create -n spyder-env python=3.6), activate it, and install (conda install spyder) and run spyder from there. Then you can keep that environment clean and don't worry about contaminating it with conda-forge or pip packages. See our guide for more about that.

@akharchenkoff Sorry you're having issues; as usual, this is likely (but not certainly) due to specific third-party dependency versions. Try creating a fresh environment and running Spyder in it, and seeing if it works there:
conda create -n spyder-env python=3.6 spyder
conda activate spyder-env
spyder

Hi,
I have just installed the latest version of anaconda (navigator 1.9.6, Spyder 3.3.2, Python 3.7).
Autocomplete doesn't work with either "Tab" or "Ctrl + Space", in both the editor and console environments.
Please assist.

@danidean If it doesn't work in either the Editor or the Console, and it was a complete fresh install of Anaconda, correct (you haven't installed, removed or updated any packages, and you haven't installed it before) then I'm really not sure what to suggest, sorry.
You can try updating spyder (conda update spyder spyder-kernels from the Anaconda prompt), and if that doesn't work, create a new environment just for Spyder and run it from there:
conda create -n spyder-env spyder=3
conda activate spyder-env
spyder
Otherwise, it must be must be something specific to your system. Spyder 4 beta 2 is coming out soon, which has a brand-new completion, introspection, help and analysis infrastructure that should hopefully resolve those problems.

Thanks.
I realized this happens when I'm in debug mode. In this mode the Console is not responsive and Autocomplete isn't functioning. Pressing Tab advances the cursor. additionally, it is impossible to reach any part of a code in a command prompt in the Console. It will automatically advance to the end of the line...

As I mentioned both Anaconda and Spyder are the latest versions. Spyder is part of the Anaconda installation, not a standalone software.

Thanks. I can only add that, this phenomenon happens on both Asus laptops
with i7 gen 8 processor, one with win10 hone edition and one with the pro
edition. On other platforms it runs fine. Additionally, latest PyCharm also
has problems on these two computers...

Well, after removing enum, conda environments can't be acticated,spyder can't start. It seemsre.py requires enum.py.
Hiw can one remove enum.py and still overcome dependency issue highlighted here?

@ccordoba12 I had to instal back enum because nothing seems to work with spyder when I uninstall enum.
It's amazing how people uninstall enum without re.py module throwing an error requiring it.

@tula0 Most likely because something went wrong in your installation environment, as this should not be the case. The standard library re module requires the standard library enum module in Python versions >=3.4, when enum was first added as a standard library module. Otherwise, a standard library module cannot require a non-standard-library module, or Python would be broken right out of the box.
In order to diagnose this, please provide me, inside a <details> code block, your full conda list output of the environment in which you're trying to run Spyder, as well as your operating system version.

Well, the reason no one else experienced that is that no one else messed with their core Python install to remove the standard library module enum from Python itself, which naturally is going to break all manner of things. We asked people to remove the package enum34 if they had it.
The behavior you're reporting is perfectly consistent with the limitations of Spyder 3.x's completion architecture, since some things, particularly from packages (like numpy and tensorflow) heavily written in non-Python languages, simply can't be introspected easily. However, I don't have tensorflow handy right now but your second example works fine in Spyder 4, which has a next-generation completion architecture based on LSP, like VSCode and Atom have, indicating the problem should be resolved in Spyder 4. In particularly, this capability will be released in Spyder 4 Beta 2, due out shortly.

I proceeded to install Spyder 4.0.0 beta 1 ,which I git cloned from the master branch.
Beta 1, like the other betas well be once they are released, is available fully packaged from the normal channels aside from Anaconda defaults: the conda-forge and spyder-ide conda channels, as well as from pip. You can follow the instructions in our Readme, Contributing Guide or Install Guide, etc. to get it; you don't need to git clone. In fact, you would need to go out of your way to actually detach your head to the Beta 1 release tag rather than the latest master. If you're going to clone from Github, just run off the master's HEAD, since it reprisents nearly a year's worth of development work over Beta 1.
However I have seen in the README.md the 2018/2019 road map for Spyder, showing Spyder 4.0.0 beta 3 has been released.
This roadmap is somewhat out of date; if Beta 2 and 3 were released, you would see them in the Github releases tab. We implemented the major rework of our whole completion/introspection/help/analysis architecture early on (in Q3 2018, on schedule), but we've needed to spend much more time than anticipated in testing, debugging and enhancement to fix unexpected bugs, fully integrate it with Spyder and ensure it is working much more reliably than the old architecture. This work is almost complete, and so Beta 2 is released soon, with Beta 3 to shortly follow since a lot of that work was happening in parallel. Thanks for your patience!

Issue with AutoCompletion feature in Spyder
Hi @ccordoba12 (Carlos), Here is my system configuration:
I have Spyder (3.3.3) with python 3.7.3 64-bit | Qt 5.9.6 | PyQt5 5.9.2 | Windows 10 64-bit and am not able to use the Autocompletion feature in my Spyder. Also the Help window does not show for most of the simple commands (with Ctl+i) and it works only for few.

@PraveenTumma If this is the case, then help retrival is working from Spyder's end, but some objects (builtin functions, some pandas and numpy functions, methods, etc) either don't have docstrings or it is not easily possible to retrieve them due to being compiled C++ code, or other structural/package differences. However, the situation is substantially improved, to an extent possible, in Spyder 4 Beta 2.
You could try e.g. conda update spyder spyder-kernels jedi parso rope sphinx in the Anaconda prompt and see if the situation improves any. Other than that, Spyder 4 Beta 2 was just released with a preliminary version of the new completion architecture; you can try installing it (in a separate environment from your current Spyder 3 install and test it out to see if it resolves your problem; we'll have a blog post out soon with more detailed instructions on that shortly.

I'm still seeing autocompletion failure in the Editor for Spyder 4.0.0b2. This is accompanied with failure of hover hints, go to definition, and code analysis (pyflakes). These stop performing as well. The code analysis, for example indicates "invalid syntax" when syntax _is_ valid and runs properly.
Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to pin down the circumstances that cause the problem. Restarting Spyder certainly restores proper behavior, but I cannot cause the behavior by sleeping my machine. The misbehavior manifests even while actively using Spyder.
I will try to better determine the circumstances under which misbehavior starts.

@mrclary I had this occur often as well, and I isolated the circumstances to having multiple Spyder instances running at once. Was this the case for you, by any chance?

@CAM-Gerlach no, this does not correlate with my experience. I've just tested several conditions:
- works after "f5"ing several times
- works after manually sleeping computer
- works after 10min inactivity (auto sleep)
- works after 1hr inactivity (auto sleep)
- works after "f5"ing with deliberate syntax error
- works after starting second instance of Spyder (4.0.0b2)
All did _not_ manifest the misbehavior. It seems that this problem is self-aware and is avoiding detection. It will wait until I have to do real work then decide to reveal itself :-)

I'm having the exact same issues as @mrclary. The 4.0.0b2 update does not fix autocomplete or ctrl+I for information. I'll be checking out the provisional solutions he posted and will update soon.

I don't know if this is related or not, but I've been running Spyder in debug mode and dumping the log stream to file for about a week now and haven't seen any issues with command completion or introspection. However, just moments ago Spyder launched the issue reporter when I attempted a tab completion. Following is the captured traceback and the relevant logging output.

This may have been caused by an import error at the package level of the project that I was working on at the time.

@mrclary, your issue is a duplicate of #9492. Please update to python-language-server version 0.28.2 to fix that error.
And thanks a lot for taking the time of running Spyder in debugging mode and filing these issues!
